We have experience of advising Clubs and Associations on a variety of legal issues affecting them. We advise on Constitutions for sporting organisations and clubs, Rules and Regulations, Licensing Laws, Disciplinary Procedures, Employment Law and Internal Disputes. We have particular experience of representing sports persons, clubs and associations in the conduct of disciplinary hearings.

Any persons involved in the organisation or running of a sports club should have some basic knowledge of the relevant legal framework. For example what is the legal status of a sports club? Is it the same as a company or a charity? How should a club be set up? How can a club obtain a liquor licence? What laws are applicable to clubs?

Cathal Minihane has particular experience of advising GAA Clubs and Rugby Clubs in Limerick. He has also represented sports persons charged with breaches of rules or regulations before disciplinary hearings. In addition, as a panel member of the GAA’s Disputes Resolution Authority (the DRA) and a member of the Limerick County Board Hearings Committee, he has experience of sitting on a hearings panel with the responsibility of deciding on charges against sports persons. He has also advised on internal rules and regulations for sporting bodies.

Cathal has a keen interest in all sports, both as a participant and as a spectator. This love of sport gives him a great insight into the mind of a sportsperson. His involvement with his own GAA club, Na Piarsaigh Limerick City as a member, administrator, volunteer, coach and player also gives him a good insight into the day to day running of a club and the challenges facing those involved.
